Causes of Sexual Dysfunctions
Diabetes is the most common cause of sexual dysfunctions that may appear in a man’s life. More than 50% of the men who suffer from diabetes have erectile dysfunctions. A special attention must be paid to the diabetics who have a diabetic neuropathy, meaning those who have lost the sensations to their extremities. And unfortunately, with this disease there is always the possibility to get peripheral neuropathies. Other diseases that can be associated with peripheral neuropathies include chronic renal failure, anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism, breathing problems, and a long list of hereditary neuropathies.
Alcoholism and stroke are also a high threat because they damage the testicles and the result is that the testosterone levels decrease.
Aging is also a common risk for erectile dysfunction. With aging the male hormones decrease, that is why aging is considered to be a threat.
Chronic renal insufficiency may be another threatening factor. Many drugs which are prescribed to cure high blood pressure, when being associated with chronic renal insufficiency can cause erectile dysfunction.
Multiple Sclerosis – more than 50% men have erectile dysfunction because of multiple sclerosis. Bladder dysfunction can be associated also with the erectile dysfunction in multiple sclerosis.
Parkinson’s disease and abnormalities to the temporal lobe are also risk factors for impotence.
Recreational drugs are also a major cause of erection problems and the first damaging drug is tobacco. Experiments conducted by researchers have shown that even if you only smoke two cigarettes before sex you may have problems getting and keeping an erection because they reduce the blood flow to the penis. Marijuana and alcohol are two other threats to your erections.
Prescription drugs are also to blame, especially blood pressure drugs.
The major problem drugs include:
- Estrogens which are used in men with prostate cancer
- Antiandrogens (flutamide) which are also used in men with prostate cancer
- Lupron - prostate cancer drug
- Proscar – prescribed to men with enlarged prostates; it can decrease the volume of ejaculate
- Diuretics - used for men with heart disease and hypertension
- Methyldopa – an older treatment for blood pressure
- Beta blockers – prescribed for heart disease and hypertension
- Calcium Channel Blockers - newer treatments for hypertension
- Tranquilizers
- Decongestants
- Seizure Medications
- Drugs to lower Cholesterol
- Cimetidine - a drug prescribed for ulcers
- Digoxin - a drug for heart failure
